Asphalt Binder,

Asphalt Binder: The black, sticky petroleum cement that holds the rock and sand in asphalt together. Sun and oxygen slowly stiffen it until the surface turns gray and brittle.
Why it matters on your job: Sealcoating exists to protect the binder — replace the sacrificial layer every few years and the pavement underneath keeps flexing instead of cracking.
