Paving glossary
Oxidation,
defined plainly.
One term, one honest explanation — from the shop that deals with it daily.
Oxidation: The chemical aging of asphalt binder from oxygen and UV. Fresh asphalt is black and flexible; oxidized asphalt is gray and brittle.
Why it matters on your job: The Valley's 100-degree summers make oxidation our climate's main attack on pavement — sealcoat is the sunscreen.
