Paving in Merced —
built for Valley heat.
If a new asphalt surface is on your list in Merced, you don’t need a contractor on every corner — you need one worth the drive. Our yard is in Fresno, Merced is about 55 minutes north, and we’ve been making that trip since 1990.
Merced is the north valley’s gateway city — the UC campus reshaping its north side, Highway 140 carrying Yosemite traffic through, and a historic downtown holding the middle.
Growth is the story in the pavement too: new-subdivision driveways and HOA streets on the north end, campus-adjacent commercial lots, and older in-town repaves south of Bear Creek.
UC growth has Merced’s north side building at a pace the trades feel — new lots need first striping and seal cycles on builder asphalt that often shipped thin. Catching those surfaces in year two is the cheap window.
Around Merced, north-end subdivision and HOA work near the university, campus-adjacent commercial lots, and older repaves south of Bear Creek. We know the roads (Highways 99, 140 and 59) and the ground — and both matter more to a paving quote than most people think.
Paving in Merced
What the job includes.
Most paving that fails early around here fails from underneath. Clay that swells with every irrigation cycle, a skimped base, water with nowhere to go — the blacktop on top never had a chance. So when you hire us for a driveway, a lot, or a private road, you’re mostly hiring what we do to the ground first. Grading, base rock at a depth that matches your traffic, compaction in lifts — then, and only then, hot mix.
How we run a paving job.
Expect a plain-spoken visit: we walk the site, measure it, poke at the soft spots, and give you a written number with the section spec on it — base depth, mat thickness, drainage. If your old surface can carry an overlay we’ll offer that as the cheaper path; if it can’t, we’ll show you why rather than sell you two more years.
Why this shop
What the quote includes.
We’d rather lose a Merced bid than win it with a thin section. The spec gets written down — materials, prep steps, coverage — so you can compare quotes on substance instead of price alone.

Paving questions
Asked before every
Merced job.
Overlay or full repave?
An overlay works when the base underneath is still sound — isolated cracking, no alligatored areas, no soft spots. If more than about a quarter of the surface shows base failure, overlay money is better spent on a rebuild. We tell you which side of the line you're on at the estimate.
How thick should driveway asphalt be?
For a passenger-car driveway in Valley soil, the honest spec is 2.5–3 inches of hot mix over 4–6 inches of compacted base. Trucks, RVs, or ag equipment need more section — that's a conversation at the site walk, not a one-size answer.
Do you really cover Merced?
Merced is about 55 minutes north, and we group jobs out that way into efficient runs. An estimate visit is typically scheduled within the week, and grouped routing keeps mobilization off your bill.
