Paving in Bakersfield —
poured right the first time.

If a new asphalt surface is on your list in Bakersfield, you don’t need a contractor on every corner — you need one worth the drive. Our yard is in Fresno, Bakersfield is on our scheduled Kern County runs, and we’ve been making that trip since 1990.

Bakersfield anchors the southern San Joaquin Valley: oil and ag money, a real downtown, and mile after mile of neighborhoods from the historic Westchester blocks to the newer growth in the southwest and northeast.

Our Kern County runs take in the full Bakersfield mix — commercial lots off Rosedale and Ming, industrial yards near the oilfield service corridors, and residential repaves in the older grids where the driveways date to the fifties.

Kern heat is its own engineering input: Bakersfield runs hotter and drier than Fresno, which accelerates oxidation on unsealed lots and rewards owners who keep a sealcoat cycle. Our south runs stack several jobs per trip, so a single lot re-stripe rides as cheap as it would at home.

Bakersfield sits in Kern County; big-city variety at south-valley scale: oilfield-service yards, retail lots off Rosedale and Ming, and fifty-year-old driveways in the older grids, all riding our scheduled Kern County runs. Highways 99, 58 and 178 keep the trip simple, and grouped scheduling keeps small jobs affordable out here.

Paving in Bakersfield

What the job includes.

Think of new asphalt as a structure, not a coating. The mat everyone sees is only the top of a section — subgrade, compacted rock, hot mix, each layer sized to the axle loads above it. Get the section right and a Valley driveway shrugs off decades of 105-degree summers. Get it wrong and no amount of sealcoating later will save it. Thirty-plus years in this ground has made us particular about the part nobody sees.

How we run a paving job.

On job day the crew grades and compacts, trues the edges, lays machine-spread hot mix, and rolls it while the temperature is right — edges last, because that’s where a driveway goes first. Before any of that, the estimate visit settles overlay-versus-rebuild honestly, in writing, with the measurements on the page.

Paving questions

Asked before every
Bakersfield job.

Overlay or full repave?

An overlay works when the base underneath is still sound — isolated cracking, no alligatored areas, no soft spots. If more than about a quarter of the surface shows base failure, overlay money is better spent on a rebuild. We tell you which side of the line you're on at the estimate.

Does the summer heat affect paving?

It helps and it hurts. Hot mix stays workable longer in a Fresno summer, which is good for compaction — but subgrade prep matters more because the same heat bakes expansive clay hard and the winter rain swells it back. The section has to be built for both seasons.
